Hi, Folks...
I'm brand new to this list, and thank everyone who's put it
together, and keeps the conversation going.
When it first came out, I gave a Duo 210 and dock to my daughter,
heading for graduate school. She loved it, used it all the time, and in a
way it lead to her meeting my present son-in-law. (They hung out at the
same coffee shop in Ann Arbor: he playing chess, taking on all comers,
sometimes blindfolded; she, doing her philosophy work on the laptop; they,
finding interest in each other. But, of course, I digress....)
When "the kids" moved on and up to bigger/better/faster computers,
I was glad to take back the "old one," and have enjoyed having it on the
road.
However, I just bought a couple of upgrade items on a Yahoo!
auction, and am starting to put them in. The keyboard is the easy part --
3 screws out of the bottom, and it comes out with the release of two
mini-clamps (whatever they're called) holding the ribbons. But, I want to
get the case all the way open so I can install the 14.4 modem (a steal at
$9.99, I thought), which is tucked under the plastic.
(I also want to know the correct routine for when I find another
steal for a RAM upgrade.)
I've already removed the 4th screw from the bottom, and loosened
the one holding a hard-drive connector to the motherboard. But from
there, I'm stumped. Gently prying the case gets things loose (and the
rubber spacer/bumper off) on the left side, but no-go on the right. What
do I need to do next?
The only other thing I can figure is to try to remove the 2 tiny
(but terribly tight!) screws holding the hinged feet at the back... the
gizmos with the icon of a telephone on them... one covering the phone-jack
hole, the other covering the serial cable port. The torx screwdrivers
that have worked so far for me don't handle this one. I've tried both a
2mm (too large) and 1.5 mm (too small!) torx from the hardware store, and
am stymied with both. I'm willing to fiddle around some more before I pay
someone ELSE to use their correct screwdriver (sold by Apple only, for
$300 ??!). And, I'm proceding with caution because, of course, I don't
want to crack the case.
Are there, perchance, any websites that give step-by-step guidance
for doing this operation? In years past, I found such resources VERY
helpful when it came to doing ram upgrades on Mac Pluses, SE's, etc. (I
got all the way up to a IIsi, before spring from my present iMac.) I
*know* there's a community of helpful "Old Mac" folks out there...
Hope somebody can help. I'm patient!
Peace, -DHDF
