Another thing I use for the same purpose is the SuperApple control panel.  
This changes the apple for your Apple Menu in the menubar to a choice of 
various animated icons(e.g., spinning globe, steaming coffee cup, etc.).  So 
you can tell if an operation you're performing is still working when the 
animation is still paused.  It's fun, too, though unfortunately the icon 
choices are all in black-and-white.
