Hi James!
I am surely not the maddest (or experienced) hardware scientist on
this list, but since no one else answered I will try.

So far - no problem. I also updated my 270c to a 2300c without any problems.
I used the original apple service manual from this link:
http://www.traffictrak.com/ServiceManuals/powerbook_200_series.pdf
where the 2300 upgrade was described (with pictures and such).

Due to a lack of an IDE cable I had to use the small 240MB SCSI disk
and can't tell if thats only possible in theory or in practise.

>When I plugged it in, the IDE drive immediately got red-hot,

what got red hot? the whole drive or just te cable?

I need more info on this.
Is it only the drive (which) spinning up and nothing else (like
screen, backlight, etc.)?
What happens when you power it up without any hard drive?
Are there some error sounds?
You can check the startup procedure with the apple 2300 service manual
http://www.traffictrak.com/ServiceManuals/powerbook_2300_series.pdf
(many, many thanks for the people who made these availiable).

>Is there something I missed when I was putting it back together? Have I
>permanently fried this thing, or is it easily fixed?

I hope you didn't fry it.
For the mising floppy capacity, I'd like to help you out with any
dock - but the way over the ocean to chicago is quite too much.
Perhaps some duo user out of this list is located more next to you.

>Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hope I could help a little.

Good luck,
