I believe that each cell should be 3.6 volts (using my memory). As far
as fashioning your own, this should work as long as you use rechargeable
cells. The powerbooks require rechargeable PRAM batteries because they
get drained relatively hard when the powerbook (duo or otherwise) is in
Sleep mode while you swap out the main battery. In fact, one way to test
a duo for a partially bad PRAM battery is to put the duo to Sleep, then
remove AC power AND remove the main battery. Then a couple minutes later
put the main battery back in (or plug the AC power back in) and try to
Wake it up. It should wake if you have a real good Pram battery.

The Pram battery may be good enough to maintain the contents of PRAM in
the Shut Down mode but NOT good enough to generate the required current
for maintainig RAM (as well as PRAM) while in Sleep mode. A voltmeter
will not tell you this unless you are able to test the voltage while in
Sleep mode, or at least load the battery at the same rate as Sleep loads
it, which I do not know that value.
