You don't indicate what OS you're using but these basics should get you
going on OS8 on up.
First you need to make sure AppleTalk is turned on on both Macs.
Go to the Chooser and select "AppleTalk: Active".
You may need to restart after selecting.
Next you need to select your hard drive (one click).
Get info, choose sharing.
Select: "Share this item and it's contents"
Under "Everyone" give it read & write privileges.
Do this on both Macs.
Next, open the control panel "File Sharing"
Select "Users & Groups" (may be a separate CP on some OS versions)
Select "Guest" and choose to allow guests to connect to this computer.
Do this on both Macs.
Now it's time to connect to one of them.
One important note. If you're connecting the two Macs directly, you must use
an ethernet "crossover" cable. Otherwise they won't see each other (unless
the new iBook has auto sensing like the G4 TiBook, then it doesn't matter).
Go to the Chooser and select AppleShare. You should now see the other Mac.
Select the Mac and click OK.
Next dialog box click on the "Guest" Radio button, click OK.
Next you'll see the other Macs hard drive. Select and click OK.
(Note: don't click in the checkbox next to the hard drive name or your iBook
will attempt to connect to the other Mac every time you start it up.)
It should now appear on you desktop.
Start copying files!
Eject or drag to the trash when you're done.
Note: to quickly access the drive the next time you need it, just go to the
Apple menu and scroll down to "Recent Servers". You'll see the other Macs
hard drive listed in the submenu. If you connect to any other Macs they to
will be added to this submenu.
