You forgot to open the Sharing (Or sharing setup on older systems) CP
and enter your name and a password. Then click on the "start" button
next to File Sharing. This will start up file sharing. Leave "Program
linking" off. File sharing can also be turned on from the Control strip
if you have that installed.

Older systems (Pre 8.5, I think) still have the sharing item under the
file menu. It will be greyed out (as in the original request for help)
if File sharing is not turned on in the Sharing control panel.

Though it is unlikely to be an issue, I prefer not to enable guest
access and/or give "everyone" read/write access to my hard drive. It is
easier to simply connect as a registered user and type the name and
password that you entered in the sharing setup control panel.

WIth the iBook it shouldn't matter.

If you prefer a cleaner Apple menu, you can creat an alias to the other
computer's hard drive and put it anywhere you like...
