Chris,

I would open the Duo and check the connection of the trackpad cable. This
can be done by removing the Keyboard. (You don't have to remove the entire
top plastics)

There are a number of site out there that can show you how, but I am partial
to mine...

It only involves removing three screws. Depending on RAM, I would recommend
MacOS 7.6.1 or 8.1 for the Duos. Considering you want a very basic system,
7.6.1 sounds like your best bet. You can install the Appearance extensions
from 8.0 on top of 7.6 to get the platinum look and reported compatibility
with some 8.0 only apps.

However, 7.6 and later are not available for free, so you may prefer to opt
for 7.5.3, which can be downloaded for free from Apple.
