Chris,
Plug both machines in and leave them plugged in (and turned off) at least
overnight. That way the PRAM batteries will have time to charge up. (If
they're still good.) It could simply be that the PRAM batteries are
discharged.
I don't remember what the 280's symptoms are, but if it boots to a flashing
question mark, then download the OS 8.1 disk tools disk from Apple and boot
from that.
