As far as buying "dead" machines to rehab then resell, you're probably
right, it may not be worth it... but I think you may be throwing out the
baby with the bathwater.

I bought an upgraded 2400 (Newer 240) on eBay about a year and a half ago,
and have not had problems with it. Upgraded RAM & HD thanks to a kind
lister (Chuck Goolsbee) who didn't charge for it--and showed me how to do
it. Have never had a "Green Light of Death" and aside from my own attempts
to push the machine's functionality beyond what it was designed for*, this
machine hasn't failed me yet. And I'm not just using it as a portable--at
work this is a desktop replacement (as ill-advised as it may be).

And working in its favor, IMHO, is this list & the 2400 community. I mean,
I've been amazed at the amount of free, non-commercial help available, and
the advice on commercial services that are (I've used MCE and Sun
Remarketing based on lister recommendations, and wouldn't hesitate to use
DT&T or AHC if I ever needed serious repair). I've bought and sold on eBay
and on the Mac2400 site. I've horded enough parts to have a complete 2nd
machine (less 1 logic board). I hope to one day have a Sidney Ho-like
reserve of parts with which to undertake Peter Liethen-ish Frankenbook
experiments or Goolsbeean paint jobs (can you say >SHINY< green?).

So, based on my experience, I'd disagree. I don't think it's silly to buy a
2400. Especially at the prices you can find now.

*Meaning, I've encountered some Cardbus issues, but that's about it.
