List readers,
I found a recommendation at a PB Duo 2300 advice page (long link!)
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:kKZ0mXA2ri8:skyscraper.fortunecity.com/seagate/536/duo2300.html+POWERBOOK+DUO+2300&hl=en
Here is the advice: "There's only one piece of essential software
for the 2300 and that's SpeedDoubler 8 which provides a dramatic
speed boost to your 2300. It requires 12MB RAM and OS 7.5.5 to run.
SpeedDoubler's emulater is vastly superior to Apple's and its disk
caching improves performance remarkably. It also accelerates
network copying (with Open Transport 1.1.2 or later) and Finder
functions such as Duplicate or Empty Trash. Don't bother buying a
5200 if you're not going to buy SpeedDoubler. It's about $US49 or
less and it's worth every penny. My hat's off to the folks at
Connectix".

Bearing in mind that this advice is from long, long ago, do you
still use & recommend this utility?
I'm probably going to run the Duo 2300 20/1.1G with the MacOS 8.1
that is already on it.

Q2. GrayAMP is recommended as the minimalist MP3 player for low,
low end PPCs like the 2300. Is version 1.2 the latest or best
version tu use? It is freeware, but I've not being able to get a
copy. If it IS freeware, and it is okay to send it, could you
kindly send me the file? It is around 230k in its .hqx form, I
think.

The advice page I quoted ends with this checklist for buyers:

"*Problems*: Not many, but some niggling ones.
1. Battery contacts: make sure they're okay. Loose connectors could
be nightmarish.
2. Keyboards. A sore point with Apple. I think they're up to
Revision F. If your keyboard has problems see if Apple'll give you
a free new one. They're a bit embarrassed about this one. Before
you buy, pull down the Key Caps desk accessory and test all the
keys. Only takes a minute.
3. Make sure the serial port's okay. Test it. If it's toast, walk
away. For the meantime it's your only way of getting so"
 ***
Have you any experiences to confirm this? I'm thinking the
all-important serial port is the most important one to get right!

Let me know if you can add your comments.
