This reminds me of a problem which I had with my 8500. It was running
fine and one of the disks seemed to be getting slower. Soon I realized
that it was really getting slow and sometimes not responding for 10 to
20 seconds, even just to open a folder. Assuming I was losing the disk
I quickly started copying the important contents onto another disk. It
sputtered along and finally succeeded. I shutdown to remove the disk I
thought was going bad (not the boot device). Afterwards the machine
started to boot and then seemed to hang with the "Mac OS" screen
showing. I chased down the cause for a couple of weekends, thinking I
had the wrong jumper settings on the remaining disk, bad termination,
etc. Finally, after testing with other disks, and mounting the suspect
disks on other Macs I found that none of the disks were bad at all. The
SCSI controller on the motherboard had gone bad! It would read disks
very very slowly, in little spurts, but the spurts were getting fewer
and farther between. It never gave any errors and never timed out. Have
you got another machine with which you can test the disk?
