Dear list reader,
Is WiFi for Mac too?
Let us fellow readers know if you are hard-core enough to try your
Mac on this media sensation - the WiFi
(is this Airport translated into a non-Apple name for
PC users so they can claim it as their own?).
Please let us all know if this is happening in your area.

*** WiFi Spawns Free Net Access
"Wireless communities, based on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers) standard 802.11b, are springing up in
cities around the U.S. and abroad...

This guerilla networking movement costs little to set up and
provides high-bandwidth wireless Internet access to anyone in the
immediate area with a laptop or personal digital assistant (PDA)..
Specifications for 802.11b of WiFi apply to wireless Ethernet LANs,
operating at the 2.4 GHz region of the radio spectrum at 5.5 Mbps
or 11 Mbps...

Several wireless neighborhoods have been established in Portland in
hopes of growing into a network.

"We hope to eventually connect them all into one big wireless
community, with a common captive portal to manage addresses and
Internet access," Shand's group said on its Web site,
personaltelco.net. "But for now, we just want to encourage people
to become part of a wireless neighborhood."

PLEASE DISCUSS!
** Have YOU found a local setup near you?
a) Is this essentially an Airport network, and (therefore) an
example of a Mac-first technology becoming a mainstream, popular
network technology?
b) WILL this influence your future decision(s) on whether to get
your next Mac with the airport card?
c) HAVE you used your airport card to tap into a grassroots
network, offered free of charge? What was your experience? Did you
appreciate the effort of the organiser ?

This looks like a great idea for the PC industry (particularly
Apple users) in terms of notebook sales - maybe even giving a
'napster-effect' to bolster use a la CD writer sales in '99-01.

If you have a similar free wireless network nearby, promote it to
Mac portable users, please.
Give your fellow tech buyer a reason to update their notebook or
PDA!

Love
Ben
