I had a 2300 that acted the same way.  Gave it to my nephews who discovered
it would run off the battery only with the ac adapter plugged into the back
of the powerbook.  Never figured out why but is still working that way to
this day.  Don't know if it will work for you but wouldn't hurt to try.
