I did this and simply placed two small ties and zipped them to each
other. It worked well, and the smaller ties' 'catches' fit better in the
case.

Speed Doubler actually works on 8.6, it doesn't work on OS9. However,
one reader has actually installed it on OS 9, too, it just required some
hacking.
You might as well install SpeedDoubler on 8.6 and see what you think of
that, too.
