Hi, fellow Listers-

As a teacher who has promoted Macs in my district, and one who has set up
and maintained several Mac labs, I'm afraid that I must agree with this
criticism. After several years of successful Mac lab use, we replaced the
old 040 Macs and the 5200s (which gave us years of virtually flawless
performance), with the original iMacs. -Nothing but problems. After about
a year of fighting with them, we replaced all of the Bondi Blue ones with
newer 350 MHz machines. Still, nothing but problems.

Apple sent people out here from time to time, but nothing was ever solved.
Printers which had worked fine with the other systems seemed to "go away"
willy-nilly with the iMac labs. This was the least of our problems. Trying
to get those things to work with the USB SuperDrives was a nightmare! At
the end of a class period, kids needed to save work to their disks, and
about 50% of the time, the iMac couldn't see the drive. There was never any
rhyme or reason to this that our Tech Coordinator could find. I don't
believe that the folks from Apple did anything to solve the situation,
either. I did not personally work with these labs, but it certainly seemed
that Apple's ability to handle USB with any reliability was sorely lacking.

Consequently, the Apples are all but gone from our school, now. The iMacs
have been split up into smaller groups and given to a couple of classes, but
nearly EVERYTHING in this building is now a Compaq.

I still use my trusty 5500/225, upgraded to a G3 processor and maxxed out at
128 mb of RAM. I still love it... and its ADB, SCSI, and video system. I
don't know where to (nor especially care to) place the blame for all this at
our school, but Apple/Macintosh has lost its standing in this system,
probably forever. This saddens me greatly, since virtually all I'd done in
past years has been completely undone.

-Dave
