Real world apps see much greater difference in coding as opposed to processor
differences. The PPC chip (RISC-reduced instruction set chip) and the CISC
(complex instruction set chip) '040 are different animals. I had a Q840AV
which ran circles around my 7100, with certain software. Also, most Duos are
LC040, sans FPU.

Getting back on topic, Jessica hit the nail on the head. The "output" of the
chip runs at the slower speed, the internal processes run clock doubled.
This allows faster CPU clocking without forcing expensive upgrades for the
rest of the hardware. We used some Intel chips as internal controllers and
swapped them for the clock doubled/tripled/quadrupled variants as we picked
up 10 to 20% higher processing capability with the internal clock doubling.
It is NOT 2X/3X/4X the thru-put by any means (even by Intel's fake numbers!)
but every bit helps! One note....the Intel chips got QUITE toasty, the
Motorola chips have a lesser problem (never looked at the chip level design,
but M has designed low power chips for years, while Intel goes for the "V8"
mentality, this may be one reason why M chips tend to run cooler).

My little 280 (hey, MD, actually had it running at 46 mhz for a while!!) has
been quite abused, but still ticks along as if it was new. Don't try the 46
mhz mod unless you have a Peltier cooler for it....I could have fried eggs on
the CPU....current useage doubled, I shut it down before permanent damage
occurred. Talk about one HOT machine! <<grin>>
