As the proud owner of a Duo 280C, I thought it might be interesting and useful to discuss the software that converts our vintage Macs from toys to tools. In that spirit, I offer the following suggestions:
Tex-Edit Plus If you work with text, you need this text editor. Highly scriptable via AppleScript, this application lets you manipulate text in a variety of ways. It comes with scripts that will convert Windows, DOS and Unix text files into Mac files, and vice versa. It can strip HTML tags or add them. It lets you read text files of unlimited sizes, adjust character and paragraph styles, and supports Word Services--allowing you to add spellchecking through a universal spell checker like Spelltools or Excalibur. Hundreds of additional scripts are available at <http://www.malcolmadams.com/te/>. $15 shareware (uncrippled and untimed) Available at <http://members.aol.com/tombb/> or <http://www.nearside.com/trans-tex/> Excalibur Freeware spellchecking program. Supports Word Services, allowing it to be integrated into other Word Services-aware applications, checking text when called from the menu. Can spellcheck the clipboard, then paste corrected text back into an application that does not support Word Services. Particularly great if you like to work with a simple text editor or if your email client of choice does not have its own spellchecking. Available at <http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~excalibr/excalibur.html> MORE 3.1 The outliner that does oh so much more. As an outliner, you can adjust the formatting of each level of your outline. Create the Harvard-style outlines beloved of English teachers everywhere, or use legal paragraph numbering to simulate the anal-retentiveness so beloved by transactional lawyers everywhere. But that is just the start. Click a button, and your outline appears as a slide show. Apply formatting and graphics and you too can wow audiences-with something other than PowerPoint. Click another button, and your outline appears as a tree diagram. Great for taking notes, creating presentations, or making an organization chart. Includes a stand-alone application to create simple graphs of your numerical data. Also available is an earlier version, MORE 1.1 and a variety of other outlining programs. Available at <www.outliners.com> I hope someone finds these notes useful and look forward to hearing about some of your favorite applications. -- Christopher J.
