I started out with 9.0.4 on a G4 tower and upgraded to 9.1. I am currently up to 9.2.1 as I am running OS X on the same machine. 9.1 was more stable for me than 9.0.4 was. If you are getting freeze-ups more than you used to, I would also check around for the cause first. If you are increasingly getting freeze ups, your hard drive itself may need maintenance or you may have some conflict with some newly installed software. The OS update may take care of some of the potential software conflicts. Although Disk First Aid is better than it used to be, it still won't fix all hard drive errors. If you haven't done any maintenance with your favorite disk utility lately, you may want to. That all said, OS 8.6 was my favorite of the "classic" operating systems. OS 9.x has some minor annoyances, among which Remote Access seems to be flakier for me. I've yet to figure out why. Office 98 doesn't work correctly under OS 9.2.1. Fortunately, I run it under 8.6 on an older machine I have. Despite whatever faults OS X has, it is my OS of choice hands down. I really noticed the difference when I created a project in iMovie. The process was a lot smoother under OS X. I didn't have to wait for a process to finish when I wanted to do something else at the same time.
