Go for the upgrade, but first.....
If I were you, I'd backup all my email, documents, and preferences
such as the menu, internet settings, special dictionaries and
templates. Then I would get a copy of Disk Doctor, and run that. Then
I'd do the upgrade. 
Only if this didn't work would I then do a reformat and reinstall.
