hello. my only experience with attempting this failed. However, i used to know an old Mac fixit guy. One day i showed him my Duo, and he recalled the line with affection. He also said he was quite sure he remembered doing just that- using the Duo screen whilst docked with the lid off. sadly he couldn;t recall *exactly* how he had done it. But he did furnish me with the tidbit that one sure step is to be sure to use the Duo power key to fire it up, not the keyboard triangle key. hope this helps someone.
