This is not an elegant solution, cut it is workable. You can copy the system folder from the disk tools diskette to the hard drive of the duo. This will allow you to start up from the hard drive. (You will get a warning that the system folder is inappropriate or some such message, but it ought to work and allow you to start up from the hard drive.) You can then copy the CD-Rom extension to the new minimal system file(or other appropriate extensions that will allow use of your dock and other input devices) . Shut down and start up again with the extensions in place and everything should work well enough to do a clean install of the OS.
I have used this technique once or twice when I found myself with a non-functioning system folder on a hard drive and no OS diskettes for re-installing the system files. I hope this will prove helpful.
