Greetings again Ricky,

I do not believe the UltraDock takes any special extensions for
any function other than Ethernet, so the Duo ought to be able
to read a cd-rom drive through the UltraDock, so long as you
can boot from the hard drive (even with a minimal system)
and the appropriate cd-rom extension is in the hard drive's
extensions file. Are you using an Apple cd-rom or some other
make? If it is another make, your cd-rom drive may require
a special extension.

Hmmm... If you have an SCSI Zip 100 drive, you might try using it. I
have had success re-installing the OS files on a Duo hard drive from
Zip. You will need to copy Iomega Guest to the Duo hard drive first
(as well as the previously described minimal system from the disk
tools diskette). You then ought to be able to use an SCSI Zip
to install the full OS.

The problem with PowerBooks is that you can't really get them to start
up from an external SCSI device (with the exception of the floppy
drive). If you can get the Zip drive to work with the duo, you might
try copying all files from the OS cd-rom to a Zip disk, then from the
Zip disk to the Duo hard drive. Then restart from the disk tools
floppy and click on the OS installer which you will have copied to the
hard drive. This workaround may allow you to install. (It seems to
me I did this once, but it took some fiddling and troubleshooting...
I do not remember all the problems I encountered or the workarounds
I ultimately used. But I am pretty sure it can be done.)

For the Iomega Guest utility, go to

   http://www.iomega.com/software

Change the settings appropriately and click GO to arrive at the
appropriate download link (which forces you to download the
entire suite of software for Zip drive, about 9 MB). If this is
a problem, contact me off-list and I can send you only the Guest
utility for Zip 100 SCSI (for OS 7.6 , about 160 KB).

Hope this helps.
Robert
