It's a good idea if you're going to do any work on something that's static
sensitive, such as the circuit boards/memory cards inside a computer.

>What _is_ a grounding wriststrap anyway; what's it made out of?

It's basically a wire. You attach one end to your wrist, the other to
something grounded. That way if you're carrying an electrical charge
or create one while working, the charge is carried away through the
wire instead of burning a hole in one of the microscopic circuits in
your computer.

It's easier to take precautions to not generate static and discharge
yourself before beginning to work. Don't go scuffing over a carpet
in your socks before starting work for example.

That's an idea, but as long as you're thinking about working in the kitchen,
there's an easier way. Do your work on the counter next to the kitchen
sink. Before you open your computer, grab the metal faucet to drain any
charge that you might have picked up - like from walking over a carpet.
Once should do it, but if you want to be safe keep touching the faucet
every once in a while to ground yourself.

If you said that you installed the memory yourself, taking it out and
reseating it would be a really good place to start. If you do that and
find you still have problems, try putting the old memory back in to
see if the problems go away. If they go away then either your memory
card was bad when you got it or you should have grounded yourself
before installing it.

hope this helps you to find the problem.
