Hello, Psion has a very long history in making PDAs. Their first models entered the market long befor notebook computers existed (about 1988). Psions can - in some areas - replace a desktop or notebook computer, something a PalmOS PDA never could. So, if you like the Diomond Mako a.k.a Psion Revo that much you should buy it and forget the desktop connectivity. The Psion's agenda is powerful enough to be your only time-management software.
If you really want to connect a PDA to your computer but dislike PDAs without a keyboard, the Psion 3c or 3mx might be right for you. They can be easily found on eBay - even in the US. They run with an older OS. What is so nice about them is that instead of MacConnect PsiMac is applied to connect them to the Mac via a serial cable. With the PsiMac Software you get DataViz-filters which allow you to make backups of the Psion, exchange PsionWord and PsionSheet files to MS Office and import and export your address book as csv. To connect the Psion to your Mac you would need the items: A USB-to-serial-converter, the Psion-Mac-cable and the software PsiMac. The cable for the Series 3c and 3mx is the same as for the Series 5, 5mx. So, if you want to upgrade to a newer Psion one day you could keep at least the cable. As a Psion 3 user I can say that even the five-year-old Series 3a is powerful enough to be my only time- and contact-management tool. PalmOS devices make absolutely no sense without another computer to connect to. Writing more than just a few words is a bad idea, it' pain (I can rember my old Newton with Graffiti!) I would not recommend to buy a notebook computer only to keep your contacts and agenda up to date. A powerbook is far too heavy, too fragile and too expensive to carry it arround all day. Furthermore it is not funny to watch the start-up screen for several minutes just to check for a single phone number.
