Your Dock probably has a very typical power supply problem: I am sure there will be a
very faint clicking-ticking sound when the mains connection of the dock is on- ? Hold
your ear close to the lower right backside of the dock, then you should be able to
hear it.

The AC/CD conversion unit in the dock itself is an Apple-designed part and can not by
replaced by other units. Thus, you will have to repair it. Fortunately, that is quite
easy: Separate the dock from the mains, open the dock, take out the power supply unit.
It will take you some force to open and some time to disassemble it. After opening,
begin by taking out the power plugs. Near them on the bottom circuit board you will
find a condensator labelled C 28. Solder it out and replace it- that is it.
The whole procedure takes about 2 hours at the first attempt. I have done about 6 or 7
of these replacements by now- it takes me less than an hour now including the
reassembly.
The C 28 condensator itself can be bought in any electronics part shop and costs just
a few cents.

Good luck and best wishes from Germany !
