PROBLEM: Can't get my Duo 280c to get onto the Internet through my Ethernet network + router + cable modem.
NETWORK SETUP: Duo 280c: OS 7.6.1 w/32 mb RAM + 500 mb HD Home network: 10mb Ethernet + hubs + four PMac 7500s running OS 8.6 (3) and 9.1 (1), and a Pentium II/300 w/Win98SE. Two of the Macs have G3/300 upgrades, the other two have 604/120 daughter cards. All have plenty of RAM. One of the 7500s is a server running ASIP 6.2. Also connected to this network is a Netgear RT314 broadband router, to which a Comcast cable modem is supplying high-speed Internet access. The router is set up to receive its IP address from Comcast via DHCP, as well as acting as a firewall, and distributing IP address to the Macs/PC via its own DHCP. Also on this network is a GCC Elite 600 laser printer w/Ethernet, and an HP DeskWriter 560c w/LocalTalk connected through an Asante LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adapter. I hooked up another PhoneNet-style LocalTalk connector to the 280c's printer/modem port, then chained that to the LocalTalk connector on the DeskWriter. I can see my printers and server through the Chooser, so I know the connection is correct for that. Obviously, this Mac doesn't have Ethernet built-in (and don't own a EtherDock), so the AppleTalk CP shows no choices other than the Serial/Modem port. I do have a Dock II with an Ethernet card in it, but I'd like to get this going without that. When I go into the TCP/IP control panel (which was previously setup to access AOL through the built-in modem), the only other choice is MacTCP, where I could manually put in most of the IP address numbers, EXCEPT that there is no field for the Subnet Mask. I plugged all the right numbers in that I could, but when I open up Netscape Gold 3, it won't connect, so I'm thinking that having the Subnet Mask is probably pretty important to make this work, right? Do I need to upgrade to OS 8.1? Or can I just install a new(er) TCP/IP control panel (and some other network extensions)? Do I need to install Open Transport, too? I'm thinking that going up to OS 8.1 will probably slow this guy down, but maybe not too much, hopefully. If that will solve this problem, and not take too big a chunk of performance, memory, and HD space, then I might do it.
