It's not quite so dire as that. The firmware updater that can be downloaded
from GV/Boca will update the Japanese Platinum Pro cards - it just has to be
told how to recognise the card. One of the resources in the updater app needs
to be edited with Resedit to add the current firmware version of the card,
which can be obtained via an AT command (ATI#, where # is probably 5 or 6). I
did this independently (and successfully) to two cards of mine, but there are
better instructions detailing the procedure on the net - try Resexcellence or
another similarly inclined Mac site. Running the update this way completely
replaces the firmware, making the card indistinguishable from one sold in
North America other than the serial number and former certification.

However, I believe the original poster was having trouble using the card as
an ethernet interface rather than a modem (hence the Subject), in which case
the firmware revision probably doesn't matter. The problem they were having
is probably due to not having the proper driver installed; the most recent
version is required to use the PPro or 56K combo card with OS 9 (this can
also be downloaded from the GV site, and extracted with Tomeviewer).
