Robert,
You have your screen resolution set for thousands of colors (instead of 
256 colors).  The video capability of the LCD screen for the 2300 only 
supports 640x480 at 256 colors.  If you switch to thousands of colors, 
the screen resolution drops to 640x400 (although it still reports it as 
640x480).  So the "letterbox" effect is because the top 40 rows of pixels 
and the bottom 40 rows of pixels have been cut off.
If you have a working Duo Dock II or Plus, the Dock allows the 2300 to 
support thousands of colors at true 640x480 resolution to an external 
monitor.
Per someone else's response to you, the problem with your dock that got 
your 2300 "stuck" is probably the power supply.  You can either find a 
replacement, or repair the P.S. pretty easily.
