Accurately, the problem is with the speed and duplex autonegotiation protocol, but it's not specific to the iMac. Ethernet autosensing just works badly much of the time, and you'll have better results forcing any port that wants to use it into the correct fixed mode. In this case Apple has a set of 4 extensions you can use on the iMac, one for each possible mode combination (10/100, full or half duplex). You can also usually control this from Unix (Linux or OS X) via the ethernet driver in question by using the ifconfig command. Similarly, with a managed hub you can usually force a port into 10/half (for a passive hub) or 10/full (for a switch, which it's more likely to be if it has a management interface in the first place :).
