The upgrade company has agreed to proceed with investigations as to the feasibility and efficacy of an upgrade. That is a "big" decision for a "little" computer.
The first determination will be technical evaluation, based on a G3-600 with 256 kb inline cache, with a medium priority. Since this CPU is substantially different in architecture and power requirements, it will require a new engineering effort. Given other project priorities, an answer may be forthcoming in late-May, earliest. The second determination will be a cost evaluation. They are uncertain about cost and quantity but will strive to come in under the target range premise. The third determination will be a more critical evaluation of market, distribution, and technical support issues. I've discussed the possibility of using a few paid "volunteers/designees" in the hard core 2400 user base to perform installs on a more streamlined and cost effective basis, a "facilitation" idea that was appreciated considering 2400 "headaches". The G3-600 is actually an IBM chip codenamed "Sidewinder" Recalling my recent comments (mini-rant), this means higher CPU clock speeds are possible in iB2 right now (commercially in the 733-800 mhz range)--but are intentionally constrained due to improper market perceptions which would arise from G3s running faster than Motorola's Ti-G4-667s. So here we are, boxed in. Sidney Ho next scheduled update, late May ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! A listserv for users and fans of Mac subportables.
