Thanks to all who pointed me to the Service Source manual site for the 2400c (and all other Apple products, it seems). I have heard of some recent trouble accessing that site, but I had none yesterday afternoon.
(By the way: I didn't use anonymous ftp directly--I did it through my web browser. At the risk of offending someone: the person who reported that Anonymous user was unknown: if you are using ftp from a command line interface, the user is almost certainly "anonymous" and not "Anonymous" (i.e.: case sensitive).
