"Do you get the same error when booting off floppy?"

I don't have a Duo dock, only a mini-dock, so I don't have access to a floppy.

" Do you ever get to a Happy Mac at all, even for a moment?"
When I start or restart the Duo I get a happy Mac that lasts for about 30
sec., then the chimes announcing the sad mac with the error message.

"Shouldn't be too difficult to get any data off the drive even if you can't
get it booted from the HD."

How can I get the data from the drive if I can't get it booted and don't
have a floppy drive? :( Other things that I've tried: zapping the PRAM,
rebuilding the desktop, and the DOCS finger dance at startup. I've also
restarted holding down the shift key to bypass the extensions. Came across
other commands for opening the firmware; nothing worked.

I set up a persistent RAM disk in the memory control panel that survives
startup. Here's a page that suggested creating a RAM disk with a minimal
system and disk first aide for folks without a full-featured dock. The page
said that the computer would start up from the RAM disk if the other disk
was non-functional.

Can this software problem be repaired? Or am I up the creek? :_( (sad
face with tear!!)

I know it's just a computer, but I've written quite a bit with it, find
myself really liking powerbooks and duos, and hate to see it
non-functional.
