Yup, only solution.  It is the way the LCD is built.  The mono screens use a 
different process (brain isn't working this AM...transflective???) than the 
color screens, so there will be a large difference between them with ambient 
light.  My old 280 would also last MUCH longer w/ the mono screen.  Early 
LCDs worked on the priciple of twisting the light received from outside or 
via a polarizing filter inside, IIRC.  Been a few years since I had to  do 
LCD design work, sorry 'bout that!  But color screens will wash out w/high 
ambient light levels due to those differences.
