I made the entire wiring cable/harness from some scrap wires that had
female ends on them that would plug onto the pins on the dock and also
on the hard drive. I spliced in the required length of wire to the short
pieces with the female ends. Then I plugged all the wires where they
need to be and then took a hot glue gun and secured the wires together
right where they plug into their respective sockets. I can plug and
unplug them as they are not glued to the drive and the dock, just glued
to each other. It works very well. I am sure it is not as convenient as
the standard cable with its plastic connector plugs but it only took an
hour or so to make, with parts from the junkbox.
As for the drive tray, originally I didn't have one. I laid a slab of
foam rubber against the dock where the drive goes, then set the drive on
the foam then put a piece of stiff cardboard cut just the right size to
fit in the plastic clips. It seemed secure enough if you don't drop the
dock or bang it around. Later I fashioned a frame of sorts from metal
and used screws to secure it to the drive. It is probably something
similar to the real McCoy I suppose although I have never seen the
actual sled that fits the dock.
