How OS X can be shoehorned into a 2400/G3 - assuming no external
bootable volumes and an internal HD in at least 2 partitions (1 for OS
9 / 1 for OS X, 2GB or larger):

1. Download XPostFacto 2.2b7, L2CacheConfig and Tri-Backup (or
Synchronize X) to the 2400's OS 9 partition.
2. Run 'GrabL2CacheSetting' from the L2CacheConfig distribution and save
the resulting .config file somewhere on the OS 9 partition. From an OS X
10.1 CD, copy '/System/Library/Extensions/ApplePMU.kext' somewhere on
the OS 9 partition.
3. Install OS X 10.1.x (as late as you have) onto a spare, bootable
partition/volume on _another Mac_
4. Boot from the new installation and setup as you'd like the 2400 (you
can setup Energy Saver, Network, et.al. and these prefs will transfer).
5. Run Software Update and apply desired updates up to and including
10.1.4. Restart.
6. Change startup disk to your normal boot volume and reboot.
7. Using Disk Copy, 'make image from device' (X) or 'make image from
volume' (9), choose the OS X volume you just installed and make a
read-only disk image (no need to mount afterwards). It'll be about 1GB.
8. Put the disk image somewhere the 2400 can mount it via the network.
9. Mount the disk image onto the 2400 desktop and prepare the
destination volume. Use the same name as the mounted image.
10. Use a utility like Tri-Backup or Synchronize X to copy the mounted
image to the new volume. The important thing here is to use a utility
which will properly copy a bootable OS X volume. Also, choose to delete
any items from the new volume.
11. Copy the 'ApplePMU.kext' from step 2 to
'/System/Library/Extensions/' on your 2400's OS X volume, overwriting
the file of the same name. Versions of this kernel extension after 10.1
are incompatible with the 2400.
12. Run XPostFacto 2.2b7. From the menubar, check the 'Reinstall kernel
extensions' and 'Reinstall BootX' items, choose your 2400's OS X volume
from the drop down menu (on the control panel) and click the 'Restart'
button.
13. Hopefully you should have booted into OS X by now, though without an
L2 cache (slow!). Move L2CacheConfig to '/Applications/', launch and
click the lock to authenticate with your admin password.
14. You'll be prompted to locate the .config file you created with
'GrabL2CacheSetting'. Find it, open the file, verify the settings in the
control panel and check the 'Enable' box.
15. Configure your OS X and read up on the XPostFacto docs. They include
some important troubleshooting info, particularly as regards the
3400/2400 models.
16. Be prepared for the occasional, inexplicable kernel panic.

I've re-read this thing now a couple dozen times to make sure that I
haven't done something stupid like leave something out or put something
in the wrong order. I hope not... I _can_ verify that the above
procedure works on my setup:

G3/320/80MB/12GB/Farallon 10/100 cardbus.
... and on the last day of a month ending in 'L'.
