Frank, I had a similar problem on an older Mac...turned out the floppy drive 
was bad, it loaded just enough of the system to "start" but then locked up 
tighter than a tick.  I borrowed a floppy drive from a friend and got the 
system running.  I actually had to reformat the disks in a PeeCee before 
reusing them on the Mac (the Mac wants to read the directory list on the 
drive...if that is hosed, it causes the Mac to freeze).

If the hard drive you bought doesn't work, let me know.  I have a drive (750M 
IDE) with tons of software on it...I had it in a 2300 for awhile, it is an 
"archive" drive now.  Think it has 8.1 or 7.6 on it....haven't played with it 
for awhile.  Too small for my apps, but it may work for you.
