Points taken. You are definitely right that CF cards are:
1.) Slow
2.) Delicate (connectors and read/write cycle limitation)
3.) Relatively expensive (vs. HDD)

Anyway, the points that you are missing are:

1.) With CF, I can have a Disk Utility and system folder to boot from 
without carrying a floppy and floppy drive
2.) It is super convenient for quick system maintenance.
3.) More reliable than the aforementioned floppy.
4.) Much bigger than the floppy, allowing for full installs of disk 
utilites and system.

So, CF has its limitations, but it is the best option for disk 
maintenance. I wish my TiBook would boot from the PCMCIA slot...
