My problem, though, seems to be that installations in _general_
(not just system installations) don't work via SCSI.  My attempts
to install Nisus Writer (from the Performa's CD drive) were
also unsuccessful.

But I will try doing the universal system install as an experiment,
or that control panel you mention (I think it's called "Wish I Were").
