Thanks for the responses to my problem (The Mac Machinchoate, Andrew Butitta, and "Michael"). The IP address in the TCP/IP Control Panel is set to be configured by the Domain Name Server. When I entered the ISP's DNS server address in there, it still didn't work. However, I did enter an address in the "Name server addr." box, instead of letting the server do that, and then the browser was able to load pages. Hooray!
I still cannot get Claris E-Mailer to work. I did solve (or work around) one problem, which was its failure to recognize the connection. That may have been resolved as described above. Another problem was when Preferences were set to "Use Internet Config", an incorrect password (too many letters) was showing up. So I unchecked "Use Internet Config" and entered the password etc. directly into Claris E-Mailer. Now it is showing the connection but not downloading any mail. Any suggestions?
