I had this same problem awhile back with my 2400.  It turned out to be
caused by the MacPoET extension for my DSL connection.  If I didn't
disconnect before sleeping, it wouldn't wake up (other than the white
screen).

The big difference here is that mine would be ok after forceing a re-start,
while yours  isn't.
