I have 8.6, and a new machine to me, and it has never failed to wake from
sleep. You can zap the PRAM of course. One thing that I've noticed is how
long it takes for the 2400c to wake compared to modern apple books. My pismo
is LIGHTNING fast compared with that thing. So you're sure you're waiting a
good amount of time right? I assume you are.
I am not upgrading to 9, for what it's worth. 8.6 is ram hungry enough, I
don't need to lose more of my precious little 80MB of ram. And once I got my
wavelan running with airport 1.3 thanks to some instructions I found online,
I'd say this thing is running more or less at peak efficiency.
