First, thanks to Jose and Edgar (?) for their input - but it didn't help. Text encoding converters are in place, no doubles, nothing shot either. Same goes for the language and region support folder.
I'm a bit baffled, and instead of pondering any longer what to do I could spend the time probably usefully and either install the OS new or toss the current system folder and install the virgin folder I made before I even looked at how to tinker with it. At least right now I think I was halfway smart in doing that; remains to be seen... perhaps I have bulb going on on the way home? I'll keep you posted, -Tobias.
