I decided not to follow your interesting and pioneering lead and try to
shoehorn OSX onto my identically configured 2400-400 w/112 mb ram. Not
enough time to struggle get it working the way I would like, and I lose many
of my OS tweaks in Classic.

IMO the lack of power management optimization in OSX could definitely cause
these symptoms. The PM improvement of OS 8.6 over OS 8-8.1 brought longer
battery life and lower operating temperatures but on OSX with so many more
desktop machines, PM has surely not the highest priority. Unfortunately, by
the time PM is optimized in OSX, the hardware requirements will probably
have been further increased.
