Hey Frank, If you can connect to your 6100 via scsi disk mode then you must have an external scsi port right? Do you have any external scsi drives? If you do you could put a system on that and then set it as your boot drive. Move all your files to it and then take out your internal drive. Put in the new one and there you go.
You might want to check and see if you have some dirt in the dock connector and that you scsi cables are in good shape. This can mess up scsi cables big time.
