You can connect to the net via ethernet if the Local Area Network (LAN) 
that you are on is connected to the net.  If it's not connected then you 
cannot.  You use TCP/IP to do it.  Appletalk is not involved in this, 
but can be used over the net to share files and apps.  Ask the person 
that set up the connection to the net what protocol they are using.  
Most likely it's DHCP or they will give you an ip address and you put 
these into your TCP/IP control panel.
