Hello listers-

I'm new to this list and am the owner of two 2300 Duos. I'm not having
any problems with one of them, but I am having trouble with the second
2300. Normally, I would have lurked here a while, but I need the second
2300 up and running on the internet. Please forgive me for throwing such
a mess out to you all as I'm about to do.

My wife's 2300 was given to me (along with it's dock). I've only recently
got it up as it needed some repair and more RAM. My 2300 and it's dock
(the "problem child" subject of this post) has only been in my possession
about two weeks.

While my wife's 2300 (OS 8.5.1, 44MB RAM) has no problems, my machine
will not operate correctly online. My 2300 is running OS 9.1, 56MB RAM,
and virtual memory is set at 64MB. Installed is Open Transport 2.7.6 and
Remote Access 4.0. Choosing "About Remote Access" in the Apple menu shows
this to be "Remote Access Personal Server" 4.0. I'm uncertain if this is
just the client or is the server version.

This machine was recently bought at an eBay auction, so I did not install
the OS nor any of the software on the machine, other than some utilities.
It does appear that the previous owner knew what he was doing, however.
There is a ton of software installed on the machine. About half of the
internal hard drive is free.

Here what's going on. I have the 2300 in its dock, and connected to the
dock is a Global Village (actually a Boca) 56k modem. Using Remote
Access, I go online. There is no problem going online. I connect fine to
my ISP. That is as far as it goes. No data seems to make it from the
modem to the computer. For instance, if running a browser, you can enter
an URL and watch the modem make the connections, but the information
never gets to the browser. You can use Anarchie, and it is no different.
No internet application seems to get any data from the modem, although
the modem is sending data. Of course, how did the modem know how to send
my password, etc.?

It is almost as though the modem is on the wrong port, however, if you
check the modem control panel, it is set correctly to the "Modem Port"
choice. AppleTalk is active, and is using the printer port. I am printing
to an old HP DeskWriter via AppleTalk. There is no problem with the
AppleTalk. I am also networked to this PowerBook 150 and my SE/30 (I'm
writing this on my old PB 150).

I have tried different modems by different manufacturers and nothing
changes. It always acts the same. I have tried the modem with the machine
out of the dock, and AppleTalk off, and it is the same. I've rebuilt the
desktop, zapped the PRAM, ran DiskWarrior and Norton, and anything else I
can think of. Nothing makes a change.

When I first got this machine, I could not select "Modem Port" in the
Modem control panel, as it was not even there to select. The machine
would not let go of the port. I installed the old "PowerBook Control
Panel" from my PB 150, which runs OS 7.6.1. I loaded that control panel,
and made the port change. I disabled that control panel, and the ports
have been corrected ever since.

Now, I've seen lots of troubles on Mac machines, but I've never seen
this. I am starting to wonder if there is something missing for Open
Transport. Perhaps I even need to do a clean install of the OS.

It needs to be mentioned that I am pretty handicapped right now as far as
computers are concerned. My wonderful Rev. B iMac blew its high voltage
card(s) about two weeks ago, and I have nothing else running that has a
CD drive. I can go use another Mac which has a CD and copy to a Zip, but
right now that's about it. My wife's machine is okay, so I can go online
and download stuff I need. Of course, all my back ups are on a USB Orb
drive so I can't get to that. When it rains, it pours.

So, here are the questions:

Is there an Open Transport issue with Duo 2300s and OS 9.1?

Is there an issue with port selection on Duo 2300's and OS 9.1?

How do you select ports in OS 9.1 since there is no control panel
comparable to the OS 7.6.1 "PowerBook" control panel?

Is there any problem associated with swapping the modem and printer ports
(i.e., using the modem on the printer port and visa versa) on a 2300?

Exactly what extensions and control panels should I be seeing with Open
Transport 2.7.6 and Remote Access 4.0?

Is there a site where I can download the software needed to use the
internal (Express?) modem? Is that software compatible with OS 9.1?

I guess that's enough for now. ;-)

Thanks in advance for any help.
