Hello again,
I have rid myself of the monitor from hell but now I have another stumper
for everyone.
My girlfriend recently broke my Farallon EtherMac card ('There were tabs to
press when you unplug it?') so I scoured eBay for a replacement. I came up
with a D-Link 650TX 10/100 16-bit ethernet card. I was skeptical at first
about it being Mac compatible, but the website offers a driver (and even
makes mention of the 2400c) so I spent $8.00 and picked one up.
It arrived in the original, unopened package. I put the card in my
PowerBook and woke it from sleep. The 650TX mounted on the desktop with a
generic icon and the name 'DFE-650.' I next installed the drivers from a
floppy after downloading them from the net. The installer had an option for
the 2400, 3400 and G3 as well as for the 1400 and 5300. I took the obvious
route, installed, and restarted. Upon restart, the card still bore the
generic icon. Thinking nothing of it, I went to the TCP/IP control panel to
set things up for DSL. Lo and behold, no 650TX to be found in the dialog.
Infrared, PPP, and AppleTalk were all present, but no Ethernet.
I called D-Link (up to number 4 now) and have basically been given the run
around. Apparently, the driver fairy created the Mac variety and then
disappeared. No one has a clue how to troubleshoot this.
So, does anyone out there use a D-Link card successfully or have any idea
what is wrong with this one? I am running 9.0.4, have 80 megs of RAM, and
the stock 180 MHz processor. Nothing too special.
Thanks in advance.
Nick
