I have found that turning off the 280 for awhile after the screen starts to darken causes those spots to go back to normal later on. The same thing happened to my PowerBook 180 when I left it running for several hours. I am not sure if having the backlight on is important or not. I try to run with it off if there is sufficient background illumination to save batteries at boring staff meetings.
