Hi all-

I am running a 2300 with OS 9.1, maximum RAM. The 2300 usually has
attached to it a Newer UltraDock. I take it on the road, and I am
gone over a week. This is done every other week. I need to be able
to start the 2300 from other than the internal hard drive as an
emergency measure. I would like to use a SCSI Zip 100, which I can
use via the UltraDock.

My problem is that I have been totally unable to build a Zip startup
disk that will startup the 2300. No matter what I do, the 2300 will
not start from the Zip drive.

Here's what I've tried so far. Using various versions of IomegaWare
Tools (and disk drivers), I have made numerous startup disks with
Systems from OS 8.1 to OS 9.1. Also, as per Iomega, I have installed
system software on a Zip disk just as you would on an internal hard
drive; here I installed OS 8.1. None of these disks will start the
machine. There will be brief activity on the Zip drive, and then
nothing more, as the 2300 starts up from the internal drive. Of
course, I am choosing the correct startup disk the Startup Disk
control panel. Also, as Conflict Catcher is installed, I have
attempted to choose the startup from there. I have even disabled
Conflict Catcher, as I have suspicions that Conflict Catcher can
cause some trouble starting up from other than the internal drive.
(I know that it did cause problems with my DuoDock drive until I
installed Conflict Catcher on the dock drive.) I have installed
Conflict Catcher on the Zip disks to no avail.

Not only do the Zip disks not start up the machine with the UltraDock
installed, but the Zip disks will not start the machine when it is in
a regular DuoDock. However, when the 2300 is in it's DuoDock, I can
start up from the dock internal drive with no problem when I select
that drive using Conflict Catcher.

As things stand now, if I cannot startup from another disk other than
the internal, the 2300 is not of too much value to me. I certainly
cannot trust it if I cannot fix problems that arise (...they always
do) when far from home. I'm wondering now if getting into the 2300
game was a mistake. The gauntlet of outdated, abandoned, and
obsolete technology (read: Express Modem, etc. ...) is almost too
much for me. If I want to fight with old Macs, I've got plenty
around ...all the way back to my old 128. I have to admit though, it
is fun to see the old 2300 talking to the G4 here via Ethernet.

Oddly enough, I find that I am far better off using my old PowerBook
150 on the road. It is as solid as they come and has never given me
trouble. Also, it has no problem starting from a Zip. If it weren't
for a SMTP email issue, I would still use it as my main travel
machine. It certainly is much, much faster running OS 7.6.1 than the
2300 running OS 9.1.

As things stand now, the 2300's main virtues, namely, its light
weight and small size, are not plusses. I am having to still lug the
150 with me as a back up machine.

So, everything hinges on starting the 2300 from another drive. Has
anyone running an OS 9.1 2300 had any luck starting from a Zip drive,
or is it impossible?
