This particular one is just a standard serial cable. You'd use this to
go from your real Modem/Printer Port to a standard external modem.

The second one you posted is an PhoneNet setup. Back in the mists of
time, Apple sold a Localtalk Networking setup that took not only special
little boxes, but also proprietary mini din-3 cables. Some company,
however, (blanking on the same, maybe Farallon?) made their own boxes
that did the same thing, but used regular everyday phone cable. Hence
PhoneNet.

The third thing, the standalone modem, would most likely work just fine.
You'd lose the niftiness of an entirely internal modem, though the
adapter you'd need rather kills that anyway. For a pound plus a few quid
shipping, might be worth it. On the other hand, if you're going to go to
the trouble of buying an external modem, you might want to look for at
least a 28.8 modem. There's big difference in perceived speed between
14.4 and 28.8.

Hi Edgar,

As I'm a little clueless, I was checking out the UK ebay item here;

  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2057232256

This guy seems to think it would be suitable for older Mac's. I take it
that this cable would be of no use to me, yes?
